Schools are naturally keen to claim an effective presence on the Internet as the true scale of its importance to current and future generations becomes clear. As the NGfL channels an unprecedented amount of multimedia equipment into schools, this need has become a reality…it’s no longer "When?" but "How?" The development of content on the National Grid is a priority and individual schools are anxious to play their part.
Many teachers and ICT co-ordinators have the skills required to publish a home page or small website. But creating a site with impact and shelf life, ensuring popularity and repeat visits, and keeping the site fresh, alive and relevant can be very different issues. There is also the question of content. Should schools decide this themselves, or should they follow authority guidelines? Here is how one Education Authority is tackling these issues.
Enter the Schools Web Online Project - SWOP a partnership with local and national business, professional web designers and the education authority.
The aim is for each school website to benefit from business sponsorship. Schools will receive several days of professional support in constructing and maintaining their site, as well as in using their own web publishing software. The consultancy teams will also help with experience, proven techniques and new ideas to ensure that sites inspire as well as inform.
SWOP represents a one-stop resource for all the hardware, software and publishing skills required to create an immediate and effective web presence.
As well as promoting creativity and technical expertise, the key objective is to enable each school to produce content that makes a tangible contribution to the National Grid. Schools and designers will work together to design the right website for the school. There will be no dictates on content, although a small working group has put together a guideline document.
Lambeth Schools will make a small financial contribution to the project with additional sponsorship starting at just £1350 for a calendar year. Lambeth sees it as a small price to pay when all the benefits are considered.
Through SWOP and the NGfL, sponsors can foster practical links with the local community. They will also be closely involved in the on-going local and national publicity which the Project will inevitably generate.
And, naturally each sponsor will have a presence on the website itself. Each will contain an appropriate banner linking to details of selected sponsor activities on another page. But as Phil Redman stressed, " We are very aware of the differences between sponsorship and advertising and we know that local and national business already share our views on the most appropriate level of commercial visibility in this sort of context."
